WordPress Intermediate Workshop – Web Development

WordPress Intermediate Workshop – Web Development

Jon & Kurt from Boston WordPress Meetup gave a great workshop to a very attentive group at the Labor Guild.  WordPress development has become a hot topic with over 16% of the web now running on WordPress. Here at The Toolbox Inc. we’ve developed in WordPress since 2008 and are confident that there is not a more user friendly platform out there. WordPress for Web Development is the preference for many developers

This session covered several topics for more advanced users: Security, Backups, Basic SEO, Upgrades, Content Management and Child Theming and Caching. For security there were several recommendations. First, don’t use the default user name “admin”! Hacker just troll for that and using it just makes you a big juicy target. Next, be sure to keep up with all upgrades including core, themes and plugings – many of the upgrades are specifically for security. For backups either VaultPress or Backup Buddy is recommended.  If you chose WPEngine for hosting, backups are part of the package. For SEO (Search Engine Optimization) Jon explained that WordPress gets you most of the way there if you are posting great content consistently and paying attention to keywords – this is a big topic and we do offer a WordPress SEO Workshop on its own because the topic is so important. For Upgrades, be sure to upgrade often and be wary if you changed any of the core code – this normally will not show up with your upgrade. Follow the WordPress Development Blog wordpress.org/news to keep up to date with current news. For the rest of the presentation just check out the slides below.

We hope that everyone has been able to create a great site. If you are having any problems with yours, please contact us here at the Toolbox – we’re happy to help. Be sure to post some great content and be ready for the SEO for WordPress Workshop Thursday July 23rd.  You can sign up here.

The WordPress Intermediate Workshop is part of our Web Development and Marketing Series for Small Business, Entreprenures, Start-ups and Non-Profit Organizations.
